Facebook wants your ID or a video selfie

Documents that usually work

• Passport
• National ID card
• Driving licence
• Other government-issued ID with your name and photo

Why checks fail

• Name on the profile does not match the ID.
• Glare, blur or cropped corners.
• Selfie taken in a dark room or in a hurry.
• The profile has few photos of your face to compare against.

If the name does not match

If you used a nickname, say so in the note and upload the ID anyway. Facebook may still ask for more. Terms are agreed with you before any work starts.

1. Log in on a device you have used before and read the notice in full; it says whether you can appeal and how long you have.
2. If you were hacked or cannot log in, start at facebook.com/hacked, even if you are not sure it was a hack.
3. If you no longer have the email or phone, use the 'Find your account' page with any older email or number you once used.
4. On a two-factor screen, choose 'Need another way to authenticate?' (or 'Having trouble?' on Android) to reach the identity options.
5. Check Settings, then Account status, for restrictions on posting, messaging or Marketplace.

Evidence to collect

• The profile link or username.
• For Pages: proof that you run the business.
• Screenshots of the notices and any emails from Facebook.
• Every email address and phone number ever used on the account.
• A clear photo of a government ID that matches the profile name.

Wording that works

• State the facts in two or three sentences: the profile is yours, what happened, and what you have changed.
• Do not include links or attachments the form does not ask for.
• If the name on the profile differs from your ID, say why (a nickname, a married name, a transliteration).

Avoid these

• Using a VPN or a new phone for the recovery.
• Relying on trusted contacts; Facebook says that feature is no longer supported.
• Creating a second profile while the first is disabled.
• Calling phone numbers that claim to be Facebook support; Meta has no general public support line.

What happens next

• Check that your Pages and ad accounts still list you as admin.
• Once back in, review Where you're logged in and turn on two-factor with an app.
• Expect an ID or video selfie step; complete it the first time it appears.
• Watch the email or phone on the account and the Support Inbox.

If the route is closed

• A Page or ad account was taken along with the profile.
• The notice says the decision is final.
• The ID step keeps rejecting your document.

What to send

• Your username or profile link.
• A screenshot of the notice or error, with the date visible.
• Which email or phone is on the account (just which one, never a code).
• What happened before it started, in a few lines.

Please do not send passwords, login codes, card numbers or access tokens.
